Foreign Language

The foreign language program at Unquowa is designed to show students that there are no limits to expression and communication.

We engage students' curiosity by combining culture (history, geography, music, art, modern design, fashion, etc.) and language, and we encourage them to enjoy the process of discovering means of communication different than their mother tongue. From early childhood we teach them the history, music, and literature of Spanish speaking countries, and we lead them to draw parallels between the English language and the American culture with other languages and cultures.

At Unquowa School the learning of a foreign language is a smooth process tailored to each child's developmental stages.

First and second grade students start to recognize the oral language through visual and auditory games.

Third grade students are introduced to written Spanish starting by the recognition of the sounds of vowels and consonants and their combinatory.

Fourth and fifth grade students progress to the learning of the structure of the Spanish grammar and comprehension of the reading and spoken language.

In sixth and seventh grades we start to put more emphasis on Spanish literature. Literature is a wonderful way to learn the Spanish grammar and through the author's words, to understand the culture and history of his or her country.

Eighth grade students are coached almost exclusively for high school Spanish. In the last year of middle school, we focus on essay writing based on literary analysis.

Unquowa students graduate with a high level of comprehension of the Spanish language. They reach proficiency in written and spoken Spanish. Beyond academics and perhaps more importantly, Unquowa students learn to appreciate and enjoy people's differences.
