FOOD DRIVE - MONDAY, MARCH 8 - FRIDAY, MARCH 12

We will be collecting non-perishable food items for the hungry in Fairfield County as part of the BREAD OF LIFE DRIVE (BOLD). This food drive was started in 1992 by the University of Notre Dame Alumni Club of Staten Island and has collected over 800,000 items of food. Any non-perishable food item such as rice, beans, cereal, peanut butter or canned foods (vegetables, soups, tuna, chicken) would be appreciated. We will have collection bins available in the classrooms. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

CAMPAIGN FOR UNQUOWA PRESENTATION - TUESDAY, MARCH 9

Join us in the Library on Tuesday, March 9 for a presentation by Sharon Lauer with Campaign Chairs, Mark Greenawalt and Joan Panagos. They will present background information on the upcoming Campaign for Unquowa in the Library for all parents who were unable to attend one of the recent cocktail parties.

PI DAY - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 10

We’ll be celebrating Pi Day on Wednesday with a variety of math events in our classrooms. Be sure to ask your child what they learned! In addition it’s a special CASUAL DAY and students should wear polka dots - or something with circles!

CASUAL PORTRAIT DAY - THURSDAY, MARCH 11

Rod from A Touch of Color Photography will begin taking photos of all our students Thursday morning. Students may dress casually this day and may bring in a “personality” item for his or her portrait - a favorite stuffed animal, a musical instrument, sports item, etc. He will take the photos inside this year and use a contempory background with vibrant red and blue tones. You will be receiving proofs within 10 days of the photo shoot. At that point you can decide if you’d like to place an order. The proofs are yours to keep even if you don’t order a package.

LADIES VOLLEYBALL - THURSDAY, MARCH 11

All Unquowa ladies are welcome to join us for a fun night of volleyball in the gym from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

NOON DISMISSAL - FRIDAY, MARCH 12

We have a noon dismissal on Friday. It’s school spirit day - a GREEN AND/OR WHITE CASUAL DAY!

SPRING SPORTS

We will be having 2 lacrosse teams this spring - Boys’ grades 5-7 and Girls’ grades 5-7. We will also have a Co-ed Tennis team for grades 7 - 8.  In addition, we will be offering Future Stars Baseball to students in grades K-4. Details will be emailed to parents in those grades before Spring Vacation!

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3 - SCIENCE FAIR

Science Fair for students in grades 4-6. Join us in the gym from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and learn from our scientists!

THURSDAY, MARCH 4 - ATHLETIC DINNER

Athletic Dinner from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. to celebrate our basketball teams. Our athletes and their families are all invited for a delicious dinner, recaps and photos of our successful season and presentation of awards by our coaches.

FRIDAY, MARCH 5 - NO CLASSES - PARENT CONFERENCE DAY

Parents will meet with their child’s homeroom teacher to review progress and trimester II report cards. If you haven’t set up your meeting time yet, please email your child’s teacher to make arrangements.

UNQUOWA OPEN SKATE

Students in grades K-4 - are you interested in ice skating? If we have enough interest, we will make arrangements for an Unquowa Open Skate at the
Milford Ice Skating Pavilion. The afternoon program would begin in April and be after school from 4:30-5:30. We would help organize car pools from Unquowa; students will need to be picked up at the rink at 5:30. Please email Al Boccamazzo if you are interested: aboccamazzo@unquowa.org

ADULT TOILETRIES DRIVE FOR OPERATION HOPE

We will be accepting donations of toothpaste, soap, deodorant, shampoo, razors, creams/lotions, nail clippers, shaving cream, combs, etc. through Friday, February 19.

SKI CLUB

The final Ski Club trip of the season - on SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20. It will be a day trip to Mohawk Mountain in Cornwall - a full day of skiing!. The bus will leave Unquowa at 7:30 a.m. and arrive at the mountain at 9:00. We will be back on the bus at 4:00 and arrive back at Unquowa at 5:30. Details about the costs and the permission form can be found on our bulletin board. The deadline for sign up is Tuesday, February 16. Families are welcome to join us at the mountain! COOKIES & COCOA for HAITI

A perfect way to start your day … and help Haiti. From 8:00 a.m - 8:30 a.m. on Monday, February 2 come to the dining room and purchase cocoa and cookies from Brienne Simmonds. Cookies are 75 cents each and cocoa is one dollar. Proceeds will go to Save The Children to benefit Haiti.

POSTURAL SCREENING - JANUARY 20

A Postural Screening Program to detect a possible curvature of the spine will be conducted for students in GRADES 5-8. Postural Screening is required for students in grades five through nine according to Connecticut State Law. The purpose of this program is to recognize signs of abnormal spinal development at its earliest stages so that the need for treatment can be determined.

School Postural Screening will be done on WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20. Please note that if your child has a health assessment on record at school which was done during this school year, i.e., on or after July 1st, and indicated that your child was examined for postural deformity by his/her health care provider, your child will not be screened in school. WANT COOKIES?

Unquowa Brownie Troop 33177 is now taking orders for Girl Scout Cookies Now through February 5. Order sheets will be available at assemblies or you may order them from your favorite Brownie troop member (girls in grades 1-3). If you have any questions, please contact Joan Panagos, troop leader.

GEOGRAPHY BEE

Students in grades 5 - 8 will compete in the National Geographic School Geography Bee in the Library at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, January 11. Parents are welcome to attend!

PROJECT FEEDER WATCH

For students in grades 2-8 every other Monday and Tuesday. Mrs. Curran is supervising the winter-long survey of birds at the feeding station behind our school. Dress warmly and meet at the back door at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, January 11, Tuesday, January 12, Monday January 25, Tuesday, January 26.

YOGA

Holly Tortora will be offering yoga classes for students in grades 5-8 beginning this Friday, January 8 in the Dining Room from 3:30-4:30. Class dates: Jan. 8, 22, 29; Feb. 5, 19, 26. A second session will begin after Spring break.

She will be offering yoga classes for students in grades K-4 starting next Thursday, January 14 from 3:30-4:15 in the Dining Room. A sign-up sheet will be posted outside Mrs. Tortora’s classroom. This class will be limited to 20 students to ensure the safety of all. Class dates: Jan. 14, 21, 28; Feb. 4, 18, 25.  A second session will also begin for Lower school after Spring break.

Mats will be provided if needed, and comfortable clothing  should be worn.

WINTERFEST
