Unquowa Spring Sports

Posted: Tuesday, June 8th, 2010  By: Coach Boccamazzo

The spring sports’ season featured the return of boys’ lacrosse after four years. The boys were not only competitive, but won two games and tied one. The girls’ lacrosse team finished with their best record in their short history and the tennis team was our most talented ever. We were thrilled with our young athletes’ development, competitive spirit, team play and consistent good sportsmanship.

The boys’ lacrosse team was dedicated and hard working. The boys spent two years preparing for this season and they represented us so well. We are so proud of all of them!

The girls’ lacrosse team was led by the offense of Kai, Grace and Alexis. Peta-Gay was a rock on defense, while Katherine was solid in goal.

Thank you eighth grade girls for your strong leadership this season.

Erica  was a standout for the tennis team as she won all of her singles matches. Kai,  Grace and Jeremiah where our doubles stars.

Finally, to our eighth grade athletes, Grace, Peta-Gay, Bailey, Charles, Charlie, Erica, Tim, Katherine, Matt, Greg, Andres, Davis, Kai, Stephen, Alexis, Marc Thomas, Mackenzie, Tristan and Jeremiah it has been our pleasure and honor to coach all of you!

Congratulations on a great sports year!

Boy’s Lacrosse ties King

Posted: Thursday, May 27th, 2010  By: Mr. Mitchell

Looking to avenge an a loss against King from the beginning of the season, the boy’s lacrosse team came out hungry for the victory.   The boys played a tough game and showed that they had grown tremendously as a team and as individuals.   Led by strong goal tending by seventh grader, Chris, the team jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.   Seventh grader, Jack, tacked on a second goal to make it 2-0 at the half.   King picked up the intensity in the second half and chipped away at the lead and eventually tied the game late in the fourth quarter.  The final score was 2-2.

The boys finish the season 2-3-1.  They had a tremendous season and were in every game they played competitively.   Not one game this season was decided by more than 2 goals.   Outstanding defense all season led by sixth graders Justin and Mark and seventh grader, Josh, led to a tremendously successful season!   We look forward to getting back on the field next spring!

Girls Lacrosse Victorious

The girls’ lacrosse team played their best game of the season in an 8-2 victory over Greenwich Catholic. The girls were so excited to play their first home game of the year and were inspired by their loyal fans rooting them on.

The defense was outstanding as they were led by Abbie, Peta-Gay and Jennee. Katherine had her strongest game ever in goal. Kai led the team with four goals as the girls had their best offensive production of the season.

It has been such a pleasure to witness their development this year. The girls have been hard working and dedicated to becoming a strong lacrosse team. It was joy to watch all of their efforts come to fruition with their first victory of the season.

Congratulations, ladies!

Tennis v. Stanwich

The tennis team played a strong Stanwich team last Wednesday. Our players tried their best against a more experienced team and as usual, showed wonderful sportsmanship and determination. Erica had another successful, stand out performance. We were delighted to welcome back Bailey in a competitive doubles match. She has supported the team all year in many different ways and it was refreshing to have everyone cheer for her against tough opponents. Great efforts from everyone!

Boy’s Lacrosse gets a victory against Greenwich Catholic

Posted: Friday, May 7th, 2010  By: Mr. Mitchell

The Boy’s Lacrosse team came away with a hard fought victory today against a quick and talented Greenwich Catholic team.  The team had one of its best all around games in this young season.   The squad came out shooting in the first quarter and took a commanding 5-0 lead at the end of the quarter.   The Greenwich Catholic squad fought back in the second quarter but outstanding defense led by sixth grader Mark and great goaltending by seventh grader Chris kept the score at 5-0 at the half.

In the second half, Greenwich Catholic chipped away at our lead, but the squad stayed tough and played a defensive second half, securing their second victory of the season.   The boys’ next game is on the road against St. Luke’s, whom they beat early on in the season, and we are looking to take one on the road as well!

Unquowa’s Tennis Team Shakes Hands with St. Luke’s

Posted: Friday, April 30th, 2010  By: Mrs. Burton

The Unquowa Tennis team continues to do well this season. They enjoyed a day in the sun and a 5-3 match win over the consistently gracious St. Luke’s team. It is always pleasant to watch when teams are evenly matched and sportsmanlike conduct takes a precedent. Everyone had a chance to play and cheer. It’s the game they come for. It’s the game they love. Special standouts were Erica, Kai, Winston and Parker as they continue to post personal victories and extend themselves to help others on the team improve their game. Congratulations to Isabel and Vikram for improving their personal performances and persisting through the challenging moments.

Girls’ Lacrosse ties Ridgefield Academy

The girls’ lacrosse team overcame a 7-6 deficit with two minutes left in the game. Two contested goals did not deter Gracie whose third goal tied the game with forty seconds left. Erin, Abby, Jenna and Alexis also scored goals for the Gators and Katherine was fantastic in goal. Coach O’Connell and I would like to congratulate the girls for their “never, never, never quit!” attitude under such adverse conditions. As always, you made us so proud!

Boy’s Lacrosse Gets the Victory!

Posted: Thursday, April 22nd, 2010  By: Mr. Mitchell

The boys’ lacrosse squad recorded their first victory of the season against a talented and fast St. Luke’s team.   Coming off a hard fought loss on Monday, the boys were hungry for a victory.  In the first quarter, fifth grader Ian tallied a quick goal to get the team on the board first.   St. Luke’s quickly responded and this went on through the end of the half.   St. Luke’s took the lead with a quick goal to close out the half and a 3-2 advantage.

In the second half, the ball stayed in the offensive zone a lot and after several close shots, the boys struck for two quick goals and took a 4-3 lead.  Solid defense in by seventh graders Andrew and Josh, and sixth grader Mark helped limit St. Luke’s offense.  The key, however, to this victory was outstanding goal tending by seventh grader Chris.  Congrats to the boys for their first victory of the season!

Tennis Season is Off to a “Love-ly” Start

Our first tennis match was played against Greenwich Country Day and everyone had fantastic results! It’s difficult to not enjoy a sunny day and the sounds of tennis balls hitting the sweet spots of the racquets. Our players beamed with a sense of accomplishment and good sportsmanship throughout their matches. The art of negotiating a fair call and the skill of keeping track of scores unassisted by referees or coaches is a pleasure to witness.  Erica, Kai and Parker all recorded singles wins, while Gracie and Winston had successful doubles matches. Congratulations to Isabel and Vikram for playing their very first match and a special thank you to Bailey for showing support for her team.

Boy’s Lacrosse loses a close one!

Playing in the first official boys lacrosse game in four years, the Unquowa squad came out strong against King.  Throughout the whole game, every player contributed to what was a solid start to the season.   During the first half, King tallied five goals for 5-0 lead at the half.  Early in the second half, sixth grader Justin tallied a quick goal to make it 5-1.   Strong defense in the second half kept King scoreless.   The boys had several good shots in the second half, but none found the back of the net.   The final was 5-1 in favor of King.   The boys should be proud of their strong effort and we look forward to our first home game on Wednesday against St. Luke’s.
